Bisping’s knee problems could lead to interim title fight

By on May 19, 2017

Michael BispingUFC President Dana White has stated that the promotion may book an interim middleweight title bout between Yoel Romero and Robert Whittaker, apparently due to the fact that Michael Bisping’s troublesome knee has not healed as quickly as expected after surgery.

Bisping, of course, was slated to face Romero after it was determined that Georges St. Pierre would not be able to fight until the fall at earliest. The UFC didn’t want to wait that long for a title fight, and now it appears that they really don’t want to wait that long, if they’re considering an interim title.

Long-time readers will know that I’m not a fan of interim titles. I think they’re essentially meaningless, since the champion is supposed to be the best fighter in the division, not “the best fighter besides that other fighter who has a title just like mine.” What’s the point of having two titles in a single division? You’re going to have the interim champ face the real champ eventually, anyway.

With that said, if the UFC is determined to have a middleweight title bout this summer, even if it’s for a fake title, you can’t really pick a better fight for it than Romero vs. Whittaker. Romero has been on an absolute tear and certainly has earned his shit, whereas Whittaker punched his ticket to Titleville with a win over Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza recently.

For his part, Bisping is still holding out hope for a big money fight with St. Pierre. He even called the knee problems “a blessing in disguise” because St. Pierre can’t fight just yet, anyway. That’s as transparent as it gets without just saying, “I don’t want to fight Romero. I just want my high profile title defense against GSP.”

Of course, St. Pierre has now apparently told White that he’s interested in fighting whoever holds the welterweight title when he comes back, so who really knows what the hell is going on?
