Holloway stuns Aldo in UFC 212 upset

By on June 3, 2017

hollowayMax Holloway picked up a title belt and a career-defining win on Satuday when he defeated longtime featherweight champ Jose Aldo at UFC 212.

The fight got off to a plodding start, but Aldo took the first round with a late striking flurry. Holloway started to turn things to his favor in the second round and by the third, he was regularly landing multiple punch combinations on the former champ.

Ultimately, a jab followed by a straight right knocked Aldo to the mat, where Holloway went in for the finish. Holloway briefly mounted Aldo before taking his back, unleashing strike after strike throughout. He went for, but ultimately abandoned, a rear naked choke before finally going back to ground-and-pound, leading to a TKO stoppage.

Holloway has now won eleven straight fights and with a decisive win over Aldo and Conor McGregor out of the picture, could hold onto the featherweight title for a long time.

In other action, Claudia Gadelha showed off her Brazilian jiu-jitsu skills with a first-round submission of Karolina Kowalkiewicz. The rear naked choke came midway into the opening round and represented the first time that Kowalkiewicz has ever been stopped in 12 pro fights. After a feeling out process, Gadelha scored a takedown and quickly got Kowalkiewicz’s back, leading to the submission.

Vitor Belfort finally got back into the win column with a unanimous decision victory over Nate Marquardt. The middleweight bout featured Vitor persevering through a cut near his left eye to outmuscle and outstrike Marquardt, who now has gone 3-8 in his last 11 bouts. Afterward, Belfort said that he would not be looking to retire anytime soon.
