July Fightmania Rankings

By on July 31, 2017

Tyron WoodleyJuly provided an action-packed month capped by the long-awaited rematch between Jon Jones and Daniel Cormier for the UFC Light Heavyweight Championship. Check out the rankings to see how a great month of fights have affected them.

As always, these rankings are subjective. To read a rather extensive explanation of my methodology, check out the rankings manifesto.

FLYWEIGHT DIVISION (125 LBS.)

1. Demetrious Johnson
2. Joseph Benavidez
3. Henry Cejudo
4. Kyoji Horiguchi
5. Wilson Reis
6. Ray Borg
7. Brandon Moreno
8. Jussier da Silva
9. Magomed Bibulatov
10. Sergio Pettis

This was the rare division where nothing happened in July. Pettis will be in action next month and DJ has a title defense coming up later this summer, so things won’t stay slow for long.

BANTAMWEIGHT DIVISION (135 LBS.)

1. Cody Garbrandt
2. Dominick Cruz
3. TJ Dillashaw
4. Jimmie Rivera
5. Marlon Moraes
6. Raphael Assuncao
7. Bryan Caraway
8. John Lineker
9. Thomas Almeida
10. Aljamain Sterling

Rivera was victorious over Thomas Almeida in the biggest showdown at 135 pounds during July. After Assuncao’s undeserved decision win over Moraes next month, Rivera is currently the most compelling contender outside of the Garbrandt-Cruz-TJ trifecta.

FEATHERWEIGHT DIVISION (145 LBS.)

1. Max Holloway
2. Jose Aldo
3. Frankie Edgar
4. Cub Swanson
5. Ricardo Lamas
6. Brian Ortega
7. Darren Elkins
8. Patricio Freire
9. Doo Ho Choi
10. Chan Sung Jung

After Holloway’s shocking TKO of Aldo in June, things slowed down a bit this month. Lamas TKO’ed Jason Knight and Darren Elkins defeated Dennis Bermudez by split decision. Nothing much is on tap for August for these guys, unfortunately.

LIGHTWEIGHT DIVISION (155 LBS.)

1. Conor McGregor
2. Tony Ferguson
3. Eddie Alvarez
4. Khabib Nurmagomedov
5. Edson Barboza
6. Kevin Lee
7. Nate Diaz
8. Justin Gaethje
9. Beneil Dariush
10. Michael Chiesa

We know what Conor’s plans are for the summer, but what about the rest of the division? Well, Gaethje made his first appearance in our top ten on the strength of yet another win, this time over Michael Johnson by TKO. Presumably, Diaz will be waiting for Conor when he’s done boxing, but the real contender here is “El Cucuy,” Tony Ferguson.

WELTERWEIGHT DIVISION (170 LBS.)

1. Tyron Woodley
2. Robbie Lawler
3. Stephen Thompson
4. Demian Maia
5. Rory MacDonald
6. Douglas Lima
7. Donald Cerrone
8. Jorge Masvidal
9. Neil Magny
10. Lorenz Larkin

Things have been better in the welterweight division. Woodley is the crowned king, but after his extremely uninspiring victory over Maia, he likely ranks behind Lawler and Bellator’s MacDonald in many minds. At any rate, Lawler has positioned himself for another shot at Woodley with his exciting decision victory over Cerrone.

MIDDLEWEIGHT DIVISION (185 LBS.)

1. Michael Bisping
2. Robert Whittaker
3. Luke Rockhold
4. Yoel Romero
5. Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza
6. Gegard Mousasi
7. Chris Weidman
8. David Branch
9. Anderson Silva
10. Kevin Gastelum

Whittaker’s outstanding performance against the beastly Romero is the big news this month, and he’s now our #2 middleweight. Of course, Georges St. Pierre is still planning on coming back and muddying up the waters, so Whittaker may have to be patient.

LIGHT HEAVYWEIGHT DIVISION (205 LBS.)

1. Jon Jones
2. Daniel Cormier
3. Alexander Gustafsson
4. Ryan Bader
5. Volkan Oezdemir
6. Jimi Manuwa
7. Glover Teixeira
8. Misha Cirkunov
9. Phil Davis
10. Nikita Krylov

Jon Jones is back where he belongs, sitting atop the light heavyweight rankings after winning the belt yet again. This time, he fought a competitive fight against his rival Cormier before viciously knocking him out later in the bout. It was a violent finish that likely ended their rivalry, as Cormier conceded afterward. Meanwhile, Volkan Oezdemir shocked many with his KO victory over Jimi Manuwa.

HEAVYWEIGHT DIVISION (265 LBS.)

1. Stipe Miocic
2. Alistair Overeem
3. Cain Velasquez
4. Fabricio Werdum
5. Junior dos Santos
6. Ben Rothwell
7. Francis Ngannou
8. Josh Barnett
9. Vitaly Minakov
10. Mark Hunt

The only top ten fight this month was between Overeem and Werdum, as The ‘Reem won a majority decision that likely ended their business together for good. If Cain can’t get healthy, he’s your next title challenger.

POUND-FOR-POUND (No Limit)

1. Demetrious Johnson
2. Conor McGregor
3. Cody Garbrandt
4. Stipe Miocic
5. Max Holloway
6. Jon Jones
7. Frankie Edgar
8. Daniel Cormier
9. Jose Aldo
10. Dominick Cruz
