McGregor impresses, but falls short vs. Mayweather

By on August 27, 2017

mayweather mcgregorConor McGregor had his shot against all-time boxing great Floyd Mayweather, and he didn’t waste the opportunity, landing more punches than Manny Pacquiao managed to land when he faced Floyd. However, he ultimately fell short, tiring in the later rounds before being overwhelmed by an aggressive Mayweather in the 10th round for a TKO loss.

McGregor clearly won the first three rounds and had a solid case for a few others until he started to really wear down in the ninth round. Mayweather, being the veteran of 49 professional boxing wins over a career spanning two decades, recognized McGregor’s state and started piling on the punches.

By the conclusion of the fight in the tenth round, McGregor was extremely wobbly from fatigue and was no longer bothering to get out of the way of punches, with some estimates indicating that Mayweather landed his last 25 power punches to finish the bout. Referee Robert Byrd stepped into stop the fight with McGregor up against the ropes.

The refereeing will be one point of contention in the post-fight talk, as boxing fans will undoubtedly claim that Byrd gave McGregor too much latitude to throw rabbit punches and even short hammerfists from the clinch in the earlier rounds.

However, Byrd was also quick to break up clinches in the earlier rounds, not allowing McGregor to lean on the smaller Mayweather or take too much advantage of his edge in strength.

The first two rounds saw Mayweather throw only a handful of punches in a clear strategic choice on the part of the multiple-time boxing champion. What he didn’t plan, however, was to absorb multiple very solid punches from McGregor in the early going, with McGregor landing 48 punches through three rounds.

Ultimately, it was a quality showing for McGregor in his first professional boxing match against the boxer many consider the greatest of all time.
