UFC had larger purchase offers than WME-IMG’s

By on April 26, 2017

UFCAn interesting report came out of an interview between UFC President Dana White and Megan Olivi on UFC Fight Pass, as White said that two groups came to Zuffa with proposals that were larger than WME-IMG’s $4.2 billion figure. “There was one for $5 billion,” White added.

White went on to say that the kicker for he and the Fertitta brother was that WME-IMG CEOs Ari Emanuel and Patrick Whitesell have a vision to take the organization even further than Zuffa has, which was of importance to the group.

“One of the million things that I respect about the Fertittas, they weren’t just going to let this thing go for the money,” said White. “They were gonna make sure it went to somebody who could actually take it and bring it to the next level.”

It’s interesting and, of course, leads to a lot of other questions that Olivi was never going to ask, since she’s a UFC employee and all.

For instance, what plans did WME-IMG have that the other suitors didn’t? Were the other prospective buyers planning to make radical changes to the organization?

We do know that WME-IMG has been perfectly happy to leave things largely as they were under Zuffa, even keeping White on as the UFC’s president. So perhaps one of the differences was that the other companies were looking to change things in a way that Zuffa was uncomfortable with.

After all, it can’t be something so simple as “WME-IMG wanted to take this to the next level and the other two groups didn’t.” Nobody offers $5 billion to buy something that they intend to fuck up and destroy. Well, I could see Vince McMahon doing that if he had the cash, but I’m talking about normal business leaders here. Until someone actually asks White these questions and gets him to answer, though, we’ll just have to continue speculating.
