UFC on Fox 24: Johnson vs. Reis Parting Shots

By on April 17, 2017

What’s so boring about perfection?

Fans are always complaining about someone like Demetrious Johnson, who shows up and does his job with so much efficiency that his wins are foregone conclusions.

They claim he doesn’t finish enough fights, but his finish rate isn’t much worse than what you’d find from other fighters of his weight, especially considering that he only faces title contenders and can’t bolster his record with wins over overwhelmed, unranked opponents.

The fact is that people get bored with a winner and want to see them toppled. I’m not that way. I find a streak like Johnson’s to be extremely interesting and impressive, especially with all of the times that we’ve seen how easy it is for even the best MMA fighters to lose via surprising upsets.

Johnson continues to dominate and is all but a lock to take sole ownership of the all-time record for consecutive title defenses. It’s a wonder that he ever lost a fight at all. I could see someone eking out a three-round decision over him, but I simply can’t fathom him losing three rounds of a five-round fight. You may be bored by that, but I find it intriguing and masterful, like watching an artist at work.

Movin’ On Up Award

Robert Whittaker made a huge statement by beating Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza, who has lingered, unappreciated, in title contention for what feels like years. Good for him, even though I can’t help but feel bad for Jacare, who deserved a title shot ages ago and now has to climb the ladder all over again.

Beautiful Loser Award

Jeremy Stephens always fights hard, and he nearly came away with a victory over the unbeaten Renato Carneiro last weekend. Fortunately, his resume ensures that his career will be just fine even without the win.

Holy $#!% Award

This has to go for Whittaker, who kicked Souza’s head off his shoulders to seal what could be an upcoming title shot, although the middleweight division is quite cluttered right now. Runner-up is Rose Namajunas, who did a similar thing to Michelle Waterson in their bout.
