Volkov finishes Struve at UFC Fight Night 115

By on September 3, 2017

volkov struveFormer Bellator Heavyweight Champion Alexander Volkov was victorious at UFC Fight Night 115, as he dispatched Octagon mainstay Stefan Struve in the third round via TKO.

It was the cap to a typically hard-nosed performance by Struve, who has proven to be nothing if not resilient in a UFC career that may have included too many losses by KO or TKO at this point. In the fight, Volkov was the shorter man in the cage for the first time in his career, but he used his reach more effectively than Struve, who has always preferred looping punches to jabs and straight rights.

Perhaps the only time Struve reached straight out was when he was poking the eyes of Volkov, once again highlighting a serious problem facing the sport and illustrating the reluctance of referees to actually do anything about eye pokes, whether purposeful or not.

In the finishing sequence, Struve ineffectively looked to maintain distance with push kicks, but was eventually backed against the cage where a simple 1-2 opened up to a salvo of finishing punches as Struve slumped down the cage, signalling to referee Marc Goddard that the fight had reached its conclusion.

Meanwhile, Siyar Bahadurzada dfeated Rob Wilkinson by TKO due to punches in the second round of their fight and Marion Reneau dispatched Talita Bernardo just before the final bell of their three-round fight, scoring a TKO with just six seconds left to earn an impressive win.

Other victors included Darren Till and Mairbek Taisumov, who defeated Bojan Velickovic and Felipe Silva, respectively. Perhaps the most impressive performance on the card beside Volkov’s was that of Zabit Magomedsharipov, who threw all manner of spinning and off-the-cage kicks at an overwhelmed Mike Santiago before locking up a second round rear naked choke in an explosive debut.
