GSP denies MMA quit claim

By Hakon on February 5, 2010

UFC star Georges St. Pierre insists he has never said that he would quit MMA in order to be a part of the Canadian Olympic wrestling team.

St. Pierre claims it is just a reported who has been twisting his comments.

He told MMA Weekly: “The reporter wanted to make a story, they wanted a title that would attract people to read it. That’s your job, I don’t blame you for it. I never said I was going to leave my mixed martial arts career for wrestling, I never said it. I said it was a thought behind my head.

“When I was training for my revenge against Matt Serra, if you remember what happened, Serra got hurt. At the time it was the Olympic trial for Canada and Serra got hurt. What I was going to do, I was going to try it. But Matt Serra got hurt and I had to fight Matt Hughes so I didn’t wrestle, because [again] I was training for a fight.

“Then what happened a reporter in England asked me was I ready to do it again? I said maybe I would do it again if the opportunity came up. But I am a mixed martial arts fighter first and right now my wrestling is not good enough to be an Olympian. it’s a thought behind my head. I don’t say I will never consider it but right now I never said I was going to make the move. But if I do it, I do it properly. I do it to win”
