UFC lightweight Joe Lauzon was delighted with his first-round win over Gabe Ruediger at UFC 118.
Lauzon has revealed that his gameplan was to ‘overwhelm’ his opponent. Lauzon won the fight with an armbar at 2:01 of the first-round.
He told Fighters Only Magazine: “I don’t think the fight could have gone any better. The gameplan was really just to overwhelm him. We weren’t gonna come out of the gate so fast, basically we were gonna try and work into a clinch where I figured Gabe would be comfortable but I think I could outwork him. I was planning to put him in a place where he thought he was winning, then drag him into deep water and drown him.
“Once we got in the clinch I expected to make him tired, make him keep working. When I got the first takedown I expected him to get back up – the whole idea wasn’t to put him down and finish him right away, it was to put him down and make him scramble, make him work and get tired.
“I got him down and started to work the guard pass a little bit and hit him with a really good elbow and from there it slowed him way down, he wasn’t moving his hips as much and he shut down. In jiu jitsu if you aren’t moving your hips you are in trouble. He completely shut down.”
