Fedor Emelianenko will take on Matt Mitrione in the Bellator Fighting Championships cage in just two days, but you can still be there live by buying your tickets today. Bellator 172: Fedor vs. Mitrione will be on February 18 at the SAP Center in San Jose, California.
Fedor has been at the top of his game since coming back to the sport after a three-year absence in Dec. 2015. In his comeback fight, he defeated Jaideep Singh by TKO in the first round. After that, he won a majority decision win over Fabio Maldonado. Fedor now has 36 career victories and is on a five fight winning streak. He has 11 career KO/TKO victories and 17 submission victories.
Matt Mitrione is a UFC veteran who was always known as one of the most entertaining fighters in the heavyweight division. Mitrione has victories in the Octagon over opponents like Gabriel Gonzaga, Shawn Jordan, Joey Beltran and Kimbo Slice.
Mitrione has faced two opponents in Bellator and knocked out both of them, letting the rest of the division know that he still has the athleticism that helped him get to the NFL. Mitrione’s punching power and quickness are just what he needs to have a shot against Fedor, who is one of the top finishers in MMA history.
Fedor was considered to be the best heavyweight in the sport during the golden years of MMA, as he won an incredible 27 straight fights from 2001 to 2009. Although he never competed in the UFC, he has wins over former UFC champs Tim Sylvia, Andrei Arlovski, Pedro Rizzo, Mark Coleman, and Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira.
Heavyweights Cheick Kongo and Oli Thompson will face off earlier on the card, with the winner likely to face the victor of the main event. Kongo comes into the fight with a 7-2 record in Bellator, and his resume includes big wins in the UFC against Mirko “Cro Cop” Filipovic, Pat Barry and Paul Buentello.
Thompson in particular would like another shot at Mitrione, since he lost against the former UFC heavyweight in July. Before that, he had won five straight fights.
The card will also include a showdown between veterans James Terry and David Douglas and a battle between undefeated competitors as 9-0 Adam Piccolotti and 7-0 Brent Primus face off.
