UFC still targeting Toronto show

By on May 1, 2010

The Ultimate Fighting Championship is still keen on holding an upcoming show in Toronto.

MMA is currently illegal in Toronto because of their interpretation of the law, but the UFC are hopeful that there will be legislative changes in Canada.

“There’s what is called the criminal code in the country of Canada, and it’s interpreted differently in different provinces,” UFC Vice President of Regulatory and Governmental Affairs Marc Ratner told MMAJunkie Radio.

“In Quebec they read it one way. In Alberta they read it one way. But yet in the province of Ontario, they’re saying the law only calls for prizefighting, which is boxing, and that anything else would not be included.”

“We’re coming there,” UFC President Dana White said. “We’ve always wanted to go there. Toronto has some of the best fans. They travel to [the U.S.] all the time. … They’re loyal.

“We just need to get it legal.”
